Meet the Author — Week 38

The Second Coming
1 Thessalonians 4– 2 Thessalonians3

The Lord is coming back. When, we don’t know. The Bible is clear that the time is uncertain, but that hasn’t stopped groups and individuals from trying to calculate the exact date of Christ’s return. For example, the 7th Day Adventists scheduled His return on October 22, 1844. More recently, a prophecy buff predicted 1988 as the year of Christ’s return to rapture the church. His calculations missed the mark as well.

The writers of the New Testament had something else in mind when they wrote about the second coming of Christ other than for us to play “Pick That Date”, or as one writer put it, “Adventures in Biblical Math.” The message of the Lord’s return was given to comfort our hearts and anchor our souls in the hope that one day we would be with the Lord forever. And that is to make a difference in how we live our lives today.

Can you imagine rejoicing in the Lord, praying without ceasing or giving thanks in all things if this world is all there is? Face it, this is a tough place that we live in, filled with trials, temptations and all types of evil. The world certainly isn’t our friend. But we can survive here knowing what lies ahead; we will be with the Lord forever.

When Jesus returns is God’s business. Let’s take comfort in the fact that He is coming back for us, and let’s encourage and comfort each other. We need it.
